The last post reminded me - i'm looking for a standard pull-up bar that i can somehow mount to my basment rafters. All the bars i see for sale are compact/folding/for doorways/wall-mount. Anybody know of anything decent?

I drilled some holes in the rafters and put eyebolts in. I attached chans with carabiners. I then attached handles to the chains with carabiners. This gave me a chinning bar with movable handles. Very handy for geting the most chins and finding the most comfortble position.

48' pipe, 1' o.d. 2 - 2x4' - 16' long drill 1' dia. holes in 2x4's, centered approximately 2-3 inches from the end. attach 2x4's to rafters (hanging down, obviously) with carriage bolts. Bolt to the inside face of the rafters to make sure your 48' pipe will protrude on both sides feed pipe through holes in 2x4's drill 3/16' hole into edge of one 2x4, through pipe. drive 20d nail into 2x4 edge and pipe to prevent sliding and spinning of bar

works like a charm, spanning 3 rafter bays allows headroom.

Just buy 2 pipe flanges and a section of steel pipe at a hardware store and have them thread the ends so you can attach the flanges. Give them the final dimensions. Bolt the flanges to the rafters. That is what I did.

First off - whatever your posting format is - OE hates it...

Second - The bar that BF made is: 2 qty, 16' long square tubes, drilled whole, and shoved a 48' weightlifting bar through, welded 4'x6' squares for mounting, drilled 4 holes and mounted it. In our case it is into the concrete block in the garage. The bar is welded into place so it doesn't move.

I used a length (~5 ft.) of ~ 1 inch iron pipe I found in my basement and 4 utility hooks from the hardware store. I marked a straight line across 4 rafters and drilled holes, then screwed the hooks in by hand. I placed the bar in the hooks, and did chin ups.

The bar rotates, and that bugs me, but I think it works just fine.
