Oops, I messed up: I was stuck thinking of DB's. I agree that Olympic plates are far better for use with a bar, both because the bar can usually handle more weight and because it's possible to load more weight on the bar. For DB's, I think there's no benefit to Oly plates/handles.

Exercise gums? Was this prescribed by a dentist?

Very funny, It was a typo. The word should be GYM!!! As in home gyms.

An Oly bar has a much higher moment of inertia (perpendicular to its axis), so it feels much more stable in your hands.
