My boyfriend and I work out in the early (6 AM) mornings at the local gym. We do legs/abs Mondays, chest/shoulders/tris Wednesdays, and back/biceps Fridays, with cardio in between strength workouts... 3x10. We've been going steadily for about 2.5 months, and this is my first time I've attempted to be serious about weight training.

Aside from the usual 'ow, it burns' complaints regarding the workout, what I find quite unpleasant is that by the end of the 45ish minutes we're there, I become really COLD. About halfway through the workouts, I get goosebumps and by the very end I my fingernails are nearly blue. I don't feel warm again till I can get to a hot shower...

The gym isn't inherently cold, and this doesn't happen during cardio, even though I sweat about the same amount. This hasn't happened to me in the past, either, when dabbling in the weight room or doing martial arts.

I'm not skinny by any means, so it's not that I'm low on body fat. It seems like something particular to relatively strenuous strength training rather than exercise in general. Has this happened to anyone else... anyone have any tips besides 'wear a winter coat for your workouts' ?

Are you breathing correctly?? Also, you might be cooling down if you are standing around between sets.

Well, I'm definitely breathing... in on the easy parts, out on the strenuous parts... sometimes I take a couple of shallower breaths before something that feels particularly hard, like the last few reps of squats.

I wait about 1.5 min between sets... hmm... usually I stretch but don't tend to move lots, no. It seems weird to me, though, because shouldn't I be getting WARMER as I've been moving my muscles more and more?

If you sweat as much when you do weights as you do cardio, that's quite a lot.

Well, maybe it's actually that I'm dehydrated?

I actually don't sweat TONS during cardio or weight training... a trickle down the backbone or two, for sure, but I and my clothes are definitely not soaked through.

Are you eating anything before working out? If not, you might try eating a carb-containing food first (even a non-diet soda) and see if this helps.

You're not going to *accumulate* heat as a weight training session progresses. Because you're resting. In those spaces between sets, you might get rather cold if your clothes are drenched (or even sufficiently damp in a moderately cold

Then just take water during your workout. But I don't know if it's going to help with this particular problem.

This doesn't sound right to me at all. You'll get good advice here, but i would definitely discuss this with a doctor as well.

You might also check with a physician to see if you have Raynaud's Phenomenon. Other possibilities include thyroid problems and some circulatory disorders.

Given that you are sweating, it is not likely that you are actually cold, rather, you feel cold.

A possible scenario is that you are overheating. And a lack of hydration would contribute to that, as you would not have enough sweat to cool your body.

A human body can confuse heat and cold when overheated. One of the symptoms of heat stroke is feeling cold and developing goose bumps. Heat stroke is not something that most people develop after an indoor gym workout in normal temperatures, but maybe your cooling mechanism is out of whack.

This has actually happen to my husband, but he was working out in a gym with like 90 degree heat and no air flow.

Try drinking more and wearing less.
