I am 29 yrs old. I am about 5'10 and weight about 175lbs. I don't consider myself over weight or muscular. I do have big belly that is noticeable for my size that I want to get rid of it once for all. If possible i want to get six-pack and build some muscle. I don't want to be bulky or anything like that. I just want to be fit with good posture and somewhat noticeable muscle.

My first goal is to get flat tummy without losing weight. From what I read, this may not be possible - correct me if I am wrong. Since there is no such thing as 'spot fat reduction' I have to start doing cardio and abs workout to get rid of my potbelly. Also, I have to reduce my calories intake to burn the fat that is concentrated on my belly.

My problem with this plan is that I am afraid that I will lose weight and be skinny (since I have to burn fat). Is there anything I can do to keep my weight up, lose my potbelly and build muscle at the same time? I read somewhere that in order to build a muscle I have to create surplus calorie along with eating protein. Do you have any suggestion for me to accomplish my goal?

Thanks for your opinion...

Right, you don't want to look like Arnold or anything. You already have a six-pack, you just have to strip away fat for it to show. You have to change your muscle:fat ratio. This is done through resistance training.

Props to you for spelling 'lose' correctly but you lose a point for using the word 'tummy'. That word won't fly here.

No. You have to increase overall muscle mass by doing full body resistance training (which would include abs) and increasing cardio. You are still under the mentality of 'spot reduction'. Working abs has NOTHING to do with shedding fat in that area.

Maybe yes, maybe no. If you increase cardio and start lifting, you may not have to reduce calories at all. The fat concentrated in your ahem, 'belly' will go, but it requires patience. You know... first to come on, last to go.

What plan? I don't see a plan yet. All you have said is cardio and ab work.

You're really going to have to be more specific in your goal. What type of cardio? What type of resistance training? What are you eating? etc. Actually, the good news is that newbies CAN increase muscle and shed fat at the same time by maintaining protein levels (.8-1.0g/lb) and burning more calories than you are taking in. But, you don't really have a plan yet and I'm sure some others will layout some plans for you. Be prepared for darts, but others will suggest some very good weight training routines for beginners.

I did Body-For-Life about three years ago which has its share of criticisms in and around usenet. I had a huge pot belly, but time and patience pays off. Before and after pics are here: www.knossos.org/training/

Good luck!

Didn't you get an answer already?

Start lifting weight and do some cardio. If you want to lose the fat, you have to burn it anyway. With weight lifting you can add (muscle)weight. Maybe some diet changes are in order: less fat... Good luck!

Old Nike slogan is best: 'just do it'. Rather than worry about 'the best way' at this stage, doing nothing is worse than anything.

Chose something fun, so you want to keep on doing it for the rest of your life.
