Hi all,

I've been drinking protein shakes for the last little while, and as far as I can tell they're helping. Even if they're not, they don't seem to be hurting me, and they taste pretty good, but I've been wondering about the protein sources.

In particular, while I've stuck to whey protein, I've noticed some supplements have hydrolysed protein in them - where does this protein come from? While I realise that protein is protein, there just seems to be something wrong with the idea of drinking a chocolate-flavoured meat-slurry shake. Mmmm... So if it's not labelled as protein from a particular source, where did it come from?

cheers,

I have no idea what the product makers mean by 'hydrolysed' but when I worked in a slaughter house (abattoir) we used to hydrolyse sheep hocks by dumping them in sodium hydroxide solution. It was about 60% v/v I think, could be wrong though.

Hydroylzed just means that they have predigested it to some degree (they have put it through hydrolysis). In theory, it might be absorbed a few milliseconds faster, in reality, it tends to just makes protein taste like crap.
