What is more important to burning fat during aerobic exercise - calories burnt or time spent burning those calories. I ride the elliptical machine and stair climber for about 45-60 minutes and this burns about 600 calories. But I do this in 2 stages of about 300 calories / 30 minutes each . This keeps my heart rate to about 120-140 during that time.

So if I am trying to burn fat, should I shoot for more calories or more time when I workout on these machines?

You spend 24 hours a day burning calories regardless, and you can't do a whole lot to change that (-; So I'd recommend trying to burn more calories. There's no advantage in spreading the same workload over a greater time interval.

I don't know what your max is, but that range sounds kind of low.
