I tried some of them at the gym last evening. They indeed are quite an exercise, I got an 'all body workout' feeling similar to what I get from squats even though I was only using a 20 lb. dumbbell. You're correct about their being little-known, as far as I can tell I've never seen anyone doing them in the 4 months I've been going to the gym. A pity, really, given the way they feel. Thanks for the advice.

If you keep doing DB swings, someone will eventually ask you what you're doing. Maybe they'll try them. If they do, they'll be hooked, and we'll have assimilated another minion. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Er, that is, well, what I really meant to say was ...

Gee, I'm glad you like them. As you increase the weight (very gradually, please!), it becomes essential to perform them explosively: that is, the dynamics of the exercise become critical, with the force generated immediately off the floor becoming more and more important to a successful lift. Being able to do a pullng exercise explosively is a very valuable strength characteristic.

It's also good to do a whole-body exercise that is asymmetric, since this gives the trunk muscles a kind of stabilization work they don't tend to get in other exercises. Just work both sides to keep things balanced.
