Anything that gets your heart rate up high enough for a long enough time increases the amount of calories you burn. Running is good for that. To loose weight you need to be calorie deficient - either take in less, burn more, or both.

Running is an excellent way to lose weight and speed up your metabolism. Start slow and run at a pace that you can carry on a limited conversation... Run slow and walk if necessary. Worry about speed after six months or so. You will burn more fat running slow and longer distances than if you run for speed. Might consider running every other day if knees start acting up and after a while try for a longer run once a week.

I personally think that dieting and lifting weights is a better way to achieve your *fat* loss goals.

A weight loss program that doesn't include at least some sort of policy with respect to diet is a bad one.

Having said that, I don't think it's true that lifting weights is a more effective way to burn fat than running (contrary to the wishful thinking of many posters here)

Absolutely. As Steve suggested, go to rec.running for advice about how to set up a program.

Also, you're going to need to at least think carefully about your diet if you want to lose weight.

Running is good for all kinds of reasons, but for fat loss you need to eat less food(calories) than you use. If you run your 30 minutes and than make up for it by eating extra food, no fat loss will result. So, run if you like, but watching food intake is #1.

Depends on your intensity and diet. No good burning 700 calories if you down 2 big macs afterward.

imo, it's hard to say one is MORE effective than the other. they are both effective if done rigorously, intelligently, and consistently.
