Just saw a trainer at my gym showing some woman the most bizarre exercise.
It was basically a dumbell flye only standing up straight so you're not actually *lifting* the weights at all, just moving them backwards and forwards from the side to the front of your chest!?
What the heck is that supposed to achieve? 'work' the front/side delts alternatively as you go through the movement?

If the weight was less than five pounds that sounds like a rotator cup rehab. The same movement is done standing then lying on both sides. It's also supposed to help a bruised bursa.

But when you see that fat dude who thinks fat=strength doing them with 20lb+ dumbbells it is just being an ignorant tosser

It's supposed to demonstrate that 99% of gym trainers are idiots who don't understand that gravity points down.

I've seen this a lot at one of the gyms I go to. Work = integral of F dot ds. So if gravity is down, then work = 0.

I see horizontal DB biceps curls all the time.
A couple of the trainers at my gym have recently started having their clients do sort a lunge with a horizontal flye type of motion.
Of course, Pavel put an equally dumb exercise in the last issue of MM2k so...

Whatever happened to the bench press? Writers looking for gimmicky exercises really seems to have reached a peak lately.

Move some weights around and look like you're doing something.
And what Lyle said.
